A 16-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to West Roxbury High School on Friday.

Boston police said they received a call at 11:15 a.m. to assist school police officers at West Roxbury High School on VFW Parkway. Upon arrival, school administrators told police that they had been informed that a particular student might have a firearm.

The officers were able to stop the student and recover the loaded handgun from her backpack without incident.

The student was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm.

Her name was not released and it was not immediately clear if she has a lawyer. She is set to be arraigned in juvenile court on Monday.

Boston Public Schools said in addition to the criminal charges, the student will face disciplinary action through the school district's Code of Conduct.

"The West Roxbury Education Complex will continue utilizing metal detectors and searches of students," the schools said in a statement. "The Boston Police Department and Boston School Police officers will continue to provide a presence in and around the school. BPS is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all of our students."

Police Commissioner William Evans commended school administrators and police for their handling of the case. "They followed protocol to a T and were able to safely and swiftly apprehend this student and recover the firearm without further incident," he said.
