Fires in Mattapan, Dorchester Cause Nearly $1M in Damage



    Fires Reported in Dorchester, Mattapan

    The Boston Fire Department doused a structure fire in Dorchester.

    Boston firefighters battled blazes in Mattapan and Dorchester that broke out within an hour of each other on Friday morning.

    Officials received a call around 6:40 a.m. for a blaze at 320 Talbot Avenue in Dorchester, according to fire officials. The structure is comprised of several businesses on the first floor, with residential units on the second and third floors. All occupants were evacuated from the structure safely. Sixteen residents were displaced.

    The blaze was quickly upgraded to a 3-alarm fire. Firefighters remained in the area to check for hot spots after the fire was knocked down.

    Officials estimate the fire caused $750,000 worth of damage. No injuries were reported.

    Some surrounding streets have been closed and Boston firefighters advise commuters to avoid the area.

    About an hour earlier, at 5:36 a.m., Boston firefighters were called to a 2-1/2-story building at 614 River St. in Mattapan for a report of a fire.

    Smoke was showing on arrival, but the fire was contained to the attic.

    One resident was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Five residents were displaced and the blaze caused about $100,000 in damage.

    The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
