2 Arrested in Connection to Deadly Shooting of Man on Bicycle in Worcester

Two men have been arrested in connection to the death of a man who was shot while riding his bicycle last week in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Police said they had arrested 24-year-old Juan Gutierrez of Southbridge and 21-year-old Kenneth Vazquez of Worcester in connection to the Sept. 7 shooting that witnesses called a "drive-by."

The shooting was reported at about 6:30 p.m. near the area of 64 Country Club Blvd., according to police. At the scene, authorities discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed him to an area hospital, where he later died.

The victim was identified as Juan Mendez, 37, of Worcester.

According to authorities, the suspects were arrested Tuesday when members of the Vice Squad came across Gutierrez at Millbury Street. At the time, the suspect had a warrant for his arrest and tried to flee police when he saw them on foot.

The suspect was allegedly found with several bags of cocaine and heroin.

Vazquez was found later in the day near Lake Avenue and was arrested, police said.

The suspects face charges including murder and resisting arrest. Gutierrez also faces charges that include possession of drugs with intent to distribute. Vazquez additionally faces charges of carrying a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without an FID card.

Both are expected to be arraigned Wednesday. It is unclear if either suspect has an attorney.
