2 Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze; 3 Rescued

Two of the women have disabilities that made it difficult for them to flee the blaze

Officials say two firefighters were hospitalized following the rescue of three women during a blaze that occurred over the weekend in Providence, Rhode Island.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Desmarais says firefighters found the women trapped inside their Calla Street home after responding to the fire around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Two of the women have disabilities that made it difficult for them to flee the blaze. The third woman was their caretaker.

Desmarais says the injured firefighters were transported to Rhode Island Hospital and received treatment for severe smoke inhalation and an arm injury.

Officials say the flames were under control by 5 a.m. The two-story home, built in the 1930s, was rendered uninhabitable.

Desmarais says the fire appeared to have started on the second floor. An investigation is ongoing.
