2 Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash in Quincy

Massachusetts State Police are investigating after two Weymouth residents were killed in a single-vehicle crash in Quincy on Thursday morning.

State police said the crash occurred around 10:35 a.m. near the Hancock Street ramp under the Neponset River footbridge.

The vehicle, a 2004 Ford Taurus, crashed into a concrete walkway, state police said. The impact of the crash sent a hubcap and a door flying into a nearby patch of grass.

"The way that the car just lodged in, it looks like they were going very, very fast," said Morgan Tumminelli, a passerby.

State police said preliminary investigation shows a 74-year-old Weymouth man was driving on Hancock Street, approaching Newport Avenue, when his vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and over the sidewalk, striking the bridge abutment.

"We did pull up when the cops were pulling up, and we saw that the car obviously had no roof on it," said passerby Dylan Costello.

The driver and his passenger, a 50-year-old from Weymouth, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The names of the victims are being withheld by police pending the notification of family members.
