2 Public Employees Charged With Tax Evasion

An investigation by the Internal Revenue Service into the alleged failure by Connecticut public employees to pay taxes has led to two arrests.

Troy Hester of Hartford and Ajmal Jenkins of Middletown face tax evasion charges. The U.S. Attorney's office says the indictments stem from an investigation into state employees who filed false forms and had little or federal taxes deducted.

Authorities say the 42-year-old Hester, an employee of the Metropolitan District Commission, had little to no money withheld for federal taxes between 2008 and 2013 for a loss of about $70,000.

Prosecutors say the 39-year-old Jenkins, an employee of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, failed to pay much or any federal taxes between 2009 and 2012 at a $46,000 loss.

It was not known Tuesday if they are represented by lawyers.
