2 Stranded Snowmobilers Rescued Near Androscoggin River

New Hampshire's Fish and Game Department says two snowmobilers have been rescued after getting trapped on a flooded section of road along the Androscoggin River in Shelburne.

Conservation Officer Mark Ober Jr. says they were able to sit up on their snowmobiles to keep out of the water Thursday night and called for help. After about two hours of negotiating through a maze of ice and open water, rescuers reached 51-year-old Leonard Johnson of Pembroke and 49-year-old Steve Kuliga of Hooksett.

As the temperature dropped into the single digits, the men were placed into an inflatable boat and firefighters and volunteers hauled it over 500 feet back to solid ice.

The men declined medical treatment.

Ober said the men had taken an unmaintained road that wasn't a legal snowmobile trail.
