PD: Man Facing Charges After Carrying Woman Into Path of Oncoming Truck

A Massachusetts man is facing charges after police say he carried a woman into a Gloucester roadway and into the way of an oncoming dump truck after a dispute Friday morning.

Michael Baker, 41, of Beverly, is facing charges of attempted murder, assault and battery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

State police responded to the crash at about 11 a.m. in the area of 951 Washington St., where a man, later identified as Baker, and a woman had been struck by a light-duty dump truck.

Baker was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital with serious injuries.

The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to Beverly Hospital, with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that during a dispute, Baker allegedly picked up the woman abruptly and entered the roadway in the path of the truck where they were both struck.

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with police.

Neighbors said before the crash, they heard Baker and the woman arguing.

"Just started yelling, bickering back and forth," recalled neighbor Joseph Calnan. "Like, he said she said stuff. But nothing like someone's going to get thrown in front of a car."

Baker is expected to be arraigned in Gloucester District Court on Monday. It's unclear if he has an attorney.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office is continuing to investigate.
