2 Walked for Hours for Help After Boat Capsizes

Three people are hospitalized after their boat capsized in Newtown’s Lake Lillinoah on Monday night and two of the passengers walked for hours to find help.

Just after 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a Newtown patrol officer noticed a man and woman walking out of the Paugusset State Forest on Hanover Street, near Silver City Road, police said.

They told the officer that they had been in a rowboat with another man and it tipped over around 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

They said they managed to swim to shore, and the other man was unconscious by the lake, so they set out for help, walking hours to find it.

An ambulance transported the man and woman who walked out of the forest to Danbury Hospital and crews from the Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue, Newtown Hook and Ladder Fire Department, the Brookfield Police Department, Lake Lillinoah Authority and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the lake area in search of the other man.

When they found him along the shore at 2:41 a.m., he was conscious and an ambulance transported him to Danbury Hospital.

Police said the boat is missing. DEEP is investigating.
