2.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Conn.

The Weston Observatory is recording activity at 7:27 a.m.

The Weston Observatory is reporting a 2.1 magnitude earthquake hit an area of eastern Connecticut, Tuesday morning.

Plainfield police have received more phone calls reporting an earthquake Tuesday morning and it is the ninth in the area since last Thursday.

The Weston Observatory at Boston College is recording activity at 7:27 a.m. and police said they heard a boom and felt the ground shake a little.

On Monday, there were several earthquakes in the area, including a magnitude 3.3 tremor around 6:30 a.m. that was stronger than the previous quakes over the last few days.

NECN viewer Jean Thompson Cranton wrote on our Facebook page, "Yep 2.1 sterling ct 730 am quite the ground rumble under the house."

Viewer Michele Penkul Guzofski wrote, "I know we get them in New England but isn't this a bit too frequent?"

A research scientist at the Weston Observatory said such a series of small earthquakes in the Northeast is not unusual because the eastern U.S. is atop a tectonic plate affected by geological pressure.
