    AP

Police in a Maine city say 22 protesters were arrested outside the christening of a U.S. warship at a shipyard.

The destroyer bearing the name of the late Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii was christened on Saturday at Bath Iron Works at an event that was closed to the public. The Bath Police Department says the protesters were arrested by the city's department and Maine State Police on charges of obstructing a public way.

Police say the arrests took place at multiple locations near the shipyard. The demonstrators included members of Maine Veterans for Peace and Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. The total group numbered about 50.

The defendants are all due in court in Bath on Aug. 6. Most were bailed on personal recognizance.
