The 35-year-old woman, who has not been identified, and her unborn child are in stable condition, according to police.

“When I heard it was a young, pregnant gal I was like, ‘Oh, gee! I hope she’s going to be okay,’” said Ginny Alexander of Lawrence Community Access Television.

“It’s horrifying because of the season,” said Alexander. “I saw the woman in the middle of the street, knew there was nothing I was going to be able to do because there were people around her.”

“I’m really hurt. It hurts. It’s the holidays, and we’re all very sad,” said Geraldine Chase, who owns Isabel’s Boutique and knew the victims. “On Thanksgiving, they’d come to look for dresses for that particular occasion. So, of course, I’m very sad. I just saw them, and one of them is gone.”

The driver has not been charged, but police say the incident remains under investigation. Police said they do not believe drugs or alcohol are a factor in the crash.

Lawrence police said they’re looking into whether speed or distracted driving played a role in the accident.
