(NECN: Deanna Morgan, Taunton, Mass.) - A man was shot and killed by Taunton, Mass. police during a confrontation Thursday afternoon.
About four houses down from the intersection of Olney St. and Wales St., in what is considered downtown Taunton, a man was shot by police on someone's front yard.
It happened on Thursday around 3:30 p.m., and officials say the man was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Mass. State Police and the Bristol County District Attorney's Office are handling the investigation.
Just as an NECN crew prepared to go live, Karen Borges told reporters at the scene her father lives in the house where the shooting happened. Borges says her father witnessed the struggle that led to the shooting - a struggle that included a police dog.
By nighttime, floodlights shone on the front yard of the yellow house where Borges' father lives. Investigators had been hard at work for five and a half hours, and were expected to be at the crime scene until midnight. To some area residents, shootings have become typical in Taunton.
Thomas Moscato, a Taunton resident, says he remembers another shooting that happened a couple miles away from this one just last week. Moscato says the crime rate in his hometown keeps going up.
