Dalai Lama Visiting Kurukulla Center in Medford, Mass.

(NECN: Greg Wayland) - The Dalai Lama is paying a special visit to a center in Medford, Mass. Tuesday afternoon.

The high holy leader of Tibetan Buddhists is speaking to a gathering of just under 2,000 people who managed to secure a ticket to the occasion.

The event is taking place at the Kurukulla Center in Medford, Mass.

This is a very special moment for the neighborhood, and it is very unexpected.

Security is very tight for the famous spiritual leader and foreign dignitary.

Mayor Michael McGlynn has turned out and will be greeting the leader.

People from far and wide, Buddhists and non-Buddhists, have turned out.

Linda Harrison, who lives just down the street, is one of the people who turned out.

Tom Walsh of Hull, Mass. says he has read a lot of the Dalai Lama’s books and he has followed him for years.

Geshe Tenley of the Kurukulla Center hopes the visit will benefit all of the city, all of the neighbors and all of the center.
