Kansas City Chiefs Player and Former UMaine Athlete Kills Girlfriend, Self

(NECN: John Moroney) - A shocking and violent end to the life of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, who played college football at the University of Maine for head coach Jack Cosgrove.

Police say the 25-year-old Belcher shot himself after arriving at the team's training facility and expressing his gratitude to his coach and general manager.

"The coaches said when he pulled up, they were never in any danger, he never threatened them," said Kansas City Police Spokesman Darin Snapp.

Minutes before taking his own life, Belcher allegedly gunned down his girlfriend and mother of his 3-month-old baby.

"There are a lot of people that are hurting. There's a young baby without a parent, or parents," said Kansas City Mayor Sylvester James.

Belcher was from West Babylon, New York and attended the University of Maine for three years, graduating in 2008 with a degree in child development and family relations.

Belcher was one of two senior co-captains his last year with the Black Bears and always dreamed of playing in the NFL.
