No Decision Today on Bulger's Immunity Claim

(NECN) - A federal judge has decided not to rule Wednesday on an immunity argument in the case of reputed gangster James "Whitey" Bulger.

The judge is giving both sides 14 days to further make their cases.

At issue is whether Bulger should be allowed to argue he was given immunity as a defense during his trial.

Government prosecutors argue the person Bulger claims gave him immunity did not have the legal right to do so, and they say a judge should rule before the trial whether Bulger's immunity claim is valid. They say if it is, it's a waste of the state's time and money to take Bulger to trial.

But Bulger's lawyers argue a jury should get to decide whether Bulger was, in fact, granted immunity, as it's their main defense.

Bulger goes to trial in June, charged in connection with 19 murders.
