RI Man Kills Wife, Self on Easter

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) - A Cumberland man and his wife are dead in what police say was a murder-suicide on Easter.

Police Chief John Desmarais says the 73-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife were in a bedroom shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday when he shot her twice in the torso with his .32-caliber handgun. He then shot himself in the head.

Desmarais says the couple's daughter and three grandchildren were in the home and heard the shots. They called police after discovering the bodies.

Their names are not being released until family is notified.

Desmarais says the husband wrote a note indicating what he planned to do and why. He would not discuss the note's details.

He says there was no indication the couple was arguing.
