Doctors Say Donohue Was Very Close to Death Before Miraculous Recovery

(NECN) - The police officer injured in Friday morning's shootout with the suspects is in critical but stable condition at Mount Auburn Hospital Monday morning.

Officer Richard Donohue was shot in the right leg with a bullet hitting three of the four major arteries. Doctors say he was close to death before making a near miraculous recovery.

“Officer's blood volume was almost entirely lost to the point of heart stopping,” said Dr. Russell Nauta.

"Dick opened his eyes and was able to move his hands and feet and most importantly squeeze his wife's hand on command,” said Chief Paul MacMillan.

Donohue was friends with Officer Sean Collier, who was killed by the suspects. The two graduated from the police academy together.

There is currently a fund for Officer Donohue, which can be found here.
