Memorial Service to Be Held for Former Mass. Gov. Cellucci

(NECN: Julie Lonchich) – Thursday, the public will have a chance to say their goodbyes to former Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci.

Cellucci passed away on Saturday, at age 65, from Lou Gehrig's disease.

An invitation-only memorial service will be held at the State House Friday at 12:30.

Then from 2: 30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the public is welcome to pay their respects in the Hall of Flags.

A private funeral mass will be held on Friday in Hudson, Mass.

Celucci devoted his entire life to public service. His political career spanned three decades, and he never lost an election.

Loncich is joined by the Chancellor of UMass Medical School, Dr. Michael Collins, who received a phone call from Cellucci after his diagnosis, and before the announcement.

Collins spoke of the last time he spoke with Cellucci.

He said, “It was the first time I heard concern in his voice. The concern was not about his own condition. The concern was that the effort to continue to raise funds for research would continue.  And we assured him we’d be doing just that.”
