(NECN: Ally Donnelly, Fall River, Mass.) - Aaron Hernandez will stay behind bars until his trial. He appeared in court Thursday, one day after being charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd. This comes as new accusations swirl around the former Patriots star.
Hernandez's bail hearing was held in a Fall River courtroom.
Bail was denied once again for Hernandez. When he was led into the courtroom, he scanned the gallery looking for his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins; he found her, blew her a kiss and whispered ‘I love you,’ but he did not say anything during the court proceedings as his lawyers argued to get him out from behind bars.
Twenty-three-year-old Aaron Hernandez faced the court in green prison clothes with his hands cuffed. His attorneys argued that this is not where he should be, that the former football start should be free on bail, ready to defend himself against the state’s scurrilous charges.
Bristol County ADA William McCauley disagreed, using the opportunity to put the facts of the case back on the record, including disturbing details of the execution style murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd.
McCauley also introduced evidence from searches conducted after Hernandez’s arrest on Wednesday, saying they found ammunition they have tied to the former football star for a glock .45, what they believe to be the murder weapon.
Hernandez’s attorneys argued that he is not a flight risk, that he’s one of the best football players in the United States of America, that he has strong ties to his community, is a homeowner, a fiancé and a father. Still, in the end, the judge sided with the state, saying that their case was circumstantial to be sure, but it was a very, very strong circumstantial case.
After the judge’s ruling denying bail, Hernandez’s fiancée ran from the courthouse. His attorneys stayed to talk briefly, saying their very disappointed with the ruling and they believe Aaron should be granted bail. Michael Fee said they’ll explore other alternatives.
