Boy Helps Rescue Father in Fitchburg, Mass.

(NECN: Julie Loncich, Fitchburg, Mass.) - An 8-year-old Fitchburg, Mass. boy is being credited.. For helping save his father.. After their car plunged into a river.

Police say Eugenio Garcia was driving home early Thursday morning when his vehicle careened over an embankment and into the Nashua River.

The car become lodged in water, but Garcia's 8-year-old son, Joshua, was able to free himself from his seat belt.

Joshua ran over a mile, barefoot and in his pajamas, to get help.

“He came, there was a knock at the door, then we were all puzzled because he was all wet,” said step-grandfather Rigoberto Guardafo. “Then he's saying, my dad is in the river and the bridge."

Fitchburg police say they've called in other state agencies to help in the investigation.

Police say Garcia faces several charges, including operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
