1 Dead, 3 Seriously Injured in Bourne, Mass. Hit-and-run

(NECN: Scot Yount, Bourne, Mass.) - Massachusetts State Police were back on the scene of a fatal accident on the Sagamore Bridge Thursday night.

They were looking for a hit-and-run driver that they believe is responsible for leaving one person dead and three others seriously injured.

Authorities said a dark-colored pickup truck was entering the highway headed toward Cape Cod when it clipped a truck and sent it into oncoming traffic, where it collided with a rental mini-van with New Jersey plates.

One person in the van was killed. Police said the man and other occupants in the van were from Israel.

One of the injured is a 43-year old-man from Sandwich, Mass.

The resulting backup left people stuck in their cars for an hour and a half for a three-mile ride.

"Literally a parking lot," said Jennifer Saccone, of Charlestown, Mass., as she described trying to get over the Sagamore Bridge at the time of the accident. "We were kind of upset about it until we heard what happened."

"Once we heard that it was a hit-and-run this morning, I just felt horrified that someone would cause an accident like that and just take off," said Susan Kooperstein, who was in the car with Saccone.

"Someone was probably out having fun drinking, horrified and just kept driving off," Saccone said.

Police sources said the video cameras on the bridge were not recording at the time of the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the pickup truck was dark in color, but little else is known so far.

Investigators have gathered as much of the broken pieces at the scene as they could find, hoping to identify something that will lead them to the suspect vehicle.

Police said the truck they are looking for might only be lightly damaged along the front left side.
