(NECN) - Lawyers for James Holmes, the man accused of opening fire on a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, are now saying he was responsible.
The admission came in a court motion made public Wednesday.
This is the first time Holmes' lawyers have said he was behind last year's shooting.
While they have acknowledged that he was the trigger man, they say he was in "the throes of a psychotic episode" at the time.
Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens more in the shooting.
He changed his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.
