Bulger Trial Wraps Up Eventful Testimony on Day 21

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Boston) - In an eventful day of testimony, jurors in the trial of James 'Whitey' Bulger heard from some key witnesses.

The first was former Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Richard Evans, who methodically went through the death certificates for all of Bulger's alleged victims - often with gruesome detail.

The testimony was not easy for family members to hear, as they were given a reminder of how their loved ones were taken from them.

“Going over the way that they killed my father - it tortured me," said Tommy Donahue, whose father Michael was allegedly killed by Bulger.

Also on the stand on Monday was Patricia Carlson, the former girlfriend of Bulger's former mob associate John Martorano.

In her testimony, she noted her reluctance and nerves. Her voice even cracked when she identified Bulger, as attorneys showed the jury the photo of her son, James Stephen Martorano, who was named after Bulger and his partner, Stephen Flemmi.

The last witness of the day was also the slowest, as retired FBI Special Agent Gerry Montanari struggled to recall details from some of the decades old cases.

“I think the jury is likely to be as troubled as I am by the testimony we saw this morning - that was a direct by the lead prosecutor," said Massachusetts School of Law Associate Dean and NECN legal analyst Michael Coyne. "The witness should have at least been familiar with his own notes and the exhibits that he was going to be asked about."
