Navy Yard Gunman Visited Rayhnam, Mass. Thai Buddhist Temple

(NECN: Scot Yount, Raynham, Mass.) - It was a place of peaceful meditation for Aaron Alexis, less than a month before the mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

And here too, according to published reports, Alexis told a monk that he heard voices in his head.

The Thai Buddhist temple, when completed, will be the largest anywhere in the world outside of Thailand.

According to the Taunton Daily Gazette, temple members recognized Alexis' face on television in the hours after the shootings at the Navy Yard that claimed 12 lives.

A board member told the paper that Alexis was fluent in the Thai language and had asked to sleep here, but was told he should go to a hotel.

Apparently he told a monk he couldn't sleep in a hotel because of the noises in his head, and was allowed to sleep at a nearby school.

This as there is more news with respect to Alexis' time in Newport, R.I.

Police report while staying at a hotel, he called them to report hearing voices. USA Today cites two unnamed military sources who say the Naval Station in Newport failed to report the incident to the Navy or Alexis' employer after being contacted by police.

Investigators are still trying to piece together the events that led the 34-year-old former Navy Reservist open fire on a dozen innocent people before being killed in a shootout with police.
