Security, Parking Restrictions in Effect for Game 6 of World Series

Fenway Park had a security scare Wednesday morning (Published Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014)

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo - Boston) - Game 6 of the World Series is finally upon us and with the possibility of a clinching win for the hometown team tonight, police and city officials are on high alert with stepped up security measures both inside and outside the ballpark.

"There’ll be extra bomb-sniffing dogs, there’ll be extra precautions, we’ve trained our officers to look for suspicious behavior, there’ll be undercover officers out there," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.

In fact at about 10:30 a.m. there was already a security scare at Fenway.

The Boston Police bomb squad was called in to check out this Penske truck parked without a driver on Van Ness Street. After 25 minutes crews gave the "all clear," but it highlights how seriously this city is taking security for this game, especially in light of the marathon bombings.

"We’re asking the public to be our eyes and ears out there, we don’t want to tarnish the image of Boston Strong, if you’re celebrating the Red Sox, do so in a positive manner," Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Dan Linskey said.

Officials are also encouraging everyone to take public transportation to and from the game. The MBTA says while it won’t stay open late just to accommodate people celebrating, they will make sure anyone attending the game can stay through the 9th inning and still catch a train.

"The scheduling of the trains will be based on the end of the game and getting people home safely," said MBTA Transit Police Superintendent-in-Chief Joseph O’Connor, “Commuter rail is the regular schedule, if need be it will be extended 45 minutes."

Commissioner Davis says if you do drive, you will likely be stuck in your parking spot for a while.

"Be prepared to wait for an hour, maybe two hours before they can leave the area because of the security precautions," Davis said.
