19-year-old Arraigned in Fatal Hit-and-run in Canton, Mass.

(NECN: John Moroney) – After a terrible accident Thursday night, there was a brief court appearance for 19-year-old Tim Ciriello on Friday morning. He's charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

He has been charged in a fatal pedestrian accident that took place around 6:20 p.m. in Canton, Mass. It happened at the intersection of Chapman and Wattles Street.

The pedestrian who was hit, a 63-year-old Canton woman, identified as Sandra Johnson, was transported to a Boston hospital where she was pronounced dead.

In court, prosecutors said the defendant left the scene of the accident and only returned when a passenger in his car urged him to do so.

His defense attorney disagreed with that assessment in court, saying his client returned to the scene after he figured out what he had done. Barry Reed said his client is very remorseful over the tragic accident.

There is some question as to whether or not the defendant was driving on a suspended license at the time of the accident. He does have some outstanding warrants from Clinton District Court, among them driving on a suspended license. Investigators are still looking into that matter.

Ciriello was arraigned in Stoughton District Court and was held on $10,000 cash bail.

He's due back in court on Dec. 9.
