(NECN: John Moroney) - George Street in East Somerville, Mass. was closed and crammed with police officers wearing tactical gear and carrying high-powered weapons Sunday.
The standoff turned the quiet urban neighborhood upside-down only three before Christmas.
"First, it was cops before the SWAT showed up. Looking around then, I suddenly see the shotguns and SWAT and you know something's up," said neighbor Steven Fillmore.
At 8:45 a.m., police were told about a man with a knife who was threatening himself and others.
Authorities said suspect lives in the house at 1012 George Street with his parents and sister. The rest of the family was evacuated from the house as negotiators tired to convince the 28-year-old suspect to give up.
Shortly after 12:20 p.m., he was taken from the home and placed in the back of an ambulance.
"They negotiated with the individual and after approximately two to three hours," said Somerville Police Chief Charlie Fermino. "He's now on his way to a local hospital with harming himself or others."

The white two-family is located in the middle of the street. One neighbor said the family has lived on the street for more than 30 years.
"I've known the family all my life," said neighbor Elio Lorusso. "I remember when he was born. Nice kid. See him everyday ... I don't know what possessed him to do what he did."
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for observations. There is no word on whether or not he will be charged.
