(NECN) - Happy Valentine's Day!

There are lots of chocolates, cupcakes and candies floating around on February 14, but before you take another bite, remember that those heart-shaped sweets could be bad for the heart.

Dr. Nandita Srividya Scott, co-director of the Corrigan Women's Heart Health Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, joined NECN to explain how much sugar is too much sugar.

"The average American consumes about 15 percent of their calories ... in added sugars," said Scott. "Basically, the more sugar you have, the more likely you are to die from cardiovascular disease."
