Work Begins This Weekend on Mass. Pike's Prudential Tunnel

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Boston) - Work will begin this weekend on the Prudential Tunnel on the Massachusetts Turnpike, which will affect traffic through Boston.

Workers will remove the suspended ceiling under the Hynes Convention Center and install new panels as needed.

"The ceiling below the Hynes Convention Center is a 45,000-square foot poured in place concrete ceiling," Mass. Convention Center Authority Executive Director Jim Rooney says.

Rooney says crews have seen flaking and and signs of deterioration of the tunnel's ceiling, which is over half a century old.

The restriction will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction through the Prudential Tunnel on weekends beginning at 9 p.m. on Fridays through 5 a.m. on Mondays for the following weekends:

March 21 - March 23
March 28 - March 30
April 4 – April 7
April 25 - April 27

Officials say the work is needed to make sure drivers can continue to travel on this section of the Massachusetts Pike safely and efficiently.
