Kevin Edson, 25, was arraigned on charges of disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, disturbing a public assembly, possession or use of a hoax device and making a false bomb threat. The latter two charges carry up to five and up to 20 years in state prison upon conviction.
Edson was ordered held on $100,000 bail. Edson was also ordered to be admitted to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation. He is scheduled to return to court on May 7.
Edson was carrying a backpack containing a rice cooker on the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. He was stopped by an officer who saw him acting suspiciously, including walking barefoot down the middle of a street and veiled in black. His face was painted blue and yellow.
Officials say Edson dropped the backpack and told the officer it contained a rice cooker. The backpack was destroyed by authorities. The bag's contents were not explosive.

Edson reportedly told Boston Police and federal agents that he knew what he was doing, and said "it was being conceived in my head." He allegedly explained his actions as "symbolism" and said "the performance got the best of me."
Joie Edson, Kevin's mother, tells The Associated Press that her son Kevin "Kayvon" Edson has bipolar disorder.
Three people were killed in last year's marathon bombings and an officer was killed in the aftermath. More than 260 were injured.
