Doctor: Marathon Bombing Anniversary Is Symbolic of Boston's Strength

(NECN: Steve Aveson) - Like the messenger who brought the news of Greek victory in history's first marathon, there is a bit of the hero in each of the 36,000 who will run the Boston Marathon this year, and that is especially true for Dr. Vivek Shah.

Shah is an orthopedic surgeon who last year found himself approaching the finish line of his race at a critical time to help so many.

He was only 50 years away from the finish line when the bombs went off. While others ran away, he ran straight ahead, providing critical assistance to those who were injured.

He said, “It’s was lucky that I was there because we are trained in trauma. It’s almost without thought that you are able to spring into action because we are trained to do it.”

Shah joined us in the studio to discuss the past year.

He is running for The Multiple-Sclerosis Foundation charity and said he keeps running because of the people he has met over the years.

He said that he doesn’t think of the anniversary as the anniversary of the bombing, but a celebration of the community’s unity and strength.
