Circus Goes Off Without Incident Following Severe Accident

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has opened in Hartford, with a rousing ovation for a group of acrobats injured in Rhode Island.

Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson expressed thanks to first responders and fans Thursday, shortly after the circus opened its eight-show run in Connecticut's capital. The crowd roared its approval when he told them the women injured in Sunday's fall in Providence were recovering in great spirits and appreciated all their prayers, thoughts and concerns.

The show then went on, with no incidents.

Seven acrobats remain hospitalized, two in serious condition, after Sunday's accident.
Federal health and safety inspectors and circus officials have not identified what caused a clip to fail, sending the eight women plummeting about 20 feet to the ground.
