PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Lincoln Chafee is harshly criticizing two Republican gubernatorial candidates who say the state should walk away from the 38 Studios debt.
The Democrat on Tuesday said anyone who doesn't understand why it's necessary to honor the $75 million in bonds plus interest that supported Curt Schilling's now-bankrupt video game company is "unfit to be governor."
Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and businessman Ken Block, the GOP hopefuls, said Monday the state shouldn't pay.
Chafee noted that he was a critic of the original deal under which the ex-Red Sox player's startup got the loan but that "common sense dictates that you pay your debts, however distasteful."
Some in the legislature also want to default.
Democratic candidates Gina Raimondo, Angel Taveras and Clay Pell support making the bond payments.
