3 Market Basket Workers Hurt Trying to Stop Shoplifter

Three workers at a Massachusetts supermarket were injured trying to stop a woman from stealing more than a dozen cases of energy drinks on Tuesday.

Police said 32-year-old Maxine Rae Parmenter of Winchendon walked out of the Market Basket on Sack Boulevard in Leominster around 5 p.m. with 15 unpurchased cases of Red Bull. According to the Sentinel and Enterprise, three managers at the store chased after her.

The managers caught up with the woman as she was loading the drinks into her car. After she got in the vehicle, police said two of the managers reached in to try to get her key out of the ignition while the third tried to take the stolen drinks out of the back seat. Parmenter allegedly tried to drive away while all three managers were still partially in the car. One manager was thrown from the car, but the others hung on. All sustained minor cuts and bruises.

Parmenter fled on foot and was found at a nearby Sears. She is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny over $250, witness interference, obstruction of justice, negligent operation and driving with a revoked license. She also reportedly had a warrant for missing a court appearance.
