5 Boys Accused of Setting Fires at Old Mill, Former YMCA in Norwich

Norwich police have arrested five boys accused of burning the former SMS Textile Mill and a former YMCA building in October.

Firefighters responded to the SMS Textile Mill, at 132 Franklin St., on Oct. 23 to battle the fire and to the former YMCA building at 337 Main St. on Oct. 24.

Both fires caused significant damage and mutual aid was called in from several other city and area fire companies.

No firefighters were injured at the former SMS Textile Mill fire, but two City of Norwich firefighters sustained minor injuries during the fire at the former YMCA.

Police have not released the boys’ names, but said two 13-year-old boys and one 12-year-old boy were charged with second-degree arson, third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief in connection with the firs at the textile mill.

Four 13-year-old boys were charged with first-degree arson, third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief.

Police said the boys were issued summons and are scheduled to appear at the Waterford Superior Court for Juvenile Matters on Nov. 18.

No additional arrests are expected.
