No Brake Marks at Scene of Deadly Whitingham, Vt. Crash: Police

A 66-year-old woman is dead after a single-vehicle car crash in Whitingham, Vermont, state police said Thursday.

The crash happened at 4:54 p.m. Wednesday when the driver, identified as Jean Ellis, was traveling north on Route 112. Ellis failed to make a left turn and continued straight, causing her 2012 Mini Cooper to go off the right side of the road.

Ellis’ car plummeted down a 10-foot retaining wall near a creek and landed on its roof in shallow water. State police said there were no marks on the road that indicated that the brakes were used. It was unclear why the driver continued to travel straight.

Emergency responders removed the driver from the car to provide assistance, but Ellis died at the scene. Authorities did not say if the vehicle had other passengers.

An investigation was ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks at 802-722-4600.
