71-Year-Old Accused of DUI After Hitting Cruiser, Injuring Officer

A police officer is recovering after his cruiser was rear-ended by a man later accused of drunken driving.

Police in Rutland said Sgt. Joseph Bartlett was in his cruiser during a vehicle stop on Thursday night when he was struck. He was treated and released at a hospital for neck pain, but is out of work temporarily.

The Rutland Herald reports the driver, 71-year-old Gerald Fleming, told police he saw the blue lights from the vehicle and tried to stop, but couldn't. Police Det. Sgt. David LaChance said there was no evidence of braking.

It wasn't immediately known if Fleming had a lawyer.
