8-Year-Old Accused of Setting Fires in New London

An 8-year-old is accused of starting fires in a New London apartment complex.

Authorities said confirmed the minor was issued a summons for reckless burning and third-degree criminal mischief in connection with a vehicle fire at the Winthrop Square Apartments in July. Fire officials said the minor is also suspected in several other small fires in the area.

New London Fire Marshal Vernon Skau confirmed the minor is 8 years old.

Skau said on July 26 crews responded to the apartments for a report of a rear door on fire. During the investigation into that fire, officials found burn marks on the floor in a common hallway of the same building and learned there had been more fires that were not reported to the fire department.

Later the police department was notified of a vehicle fire in the same complex. Using surveillance footage, investigators identified the suspect in that fire.

The suspect was not identified due to the age and the investigation is ongoing.
