83-Year-Old Woman Dies in Maine House Fire

Authorities in Maine are still investigating a apartment fire that killed an 83-year-old woman in Eliot late Monday night.

State Fire Marshals said the woman is believed to be Beverly Webber, who was living in an apartment over a garage on a property on Hanscom Road. The State Medical Examiner’s Office will assist in making a positive identification, although her body was burned beyond recognition.

Maine State Police said Webber owned the home that was attached to the garage with an apartment above it, which went up in flames at about 11:30 p.m.

Webber's son and grandson lived in the attached house and were both able to escape the fire. Her son, Ralph Webber III, 57, attempted to rescue his mother but broke his hip as he jumped out of her bedroom window.

He is recovering at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Fire officials said the blaze started in the garage. Due to heavy damage to the building, the exact cause is still unclear.
