94-Year-Old Robbed in Lawrence Pharmacy Parking Lot

A 94-year-old woman was robbed Wednesday afternoon in Lawrence.

According to police, they responded to Walgreen's Pharmacy at 220 South Broadway in Lawrence for a report of an unarmed robbery just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The woman's purse was snatched as she was sitting in a vehicle waiting for her daughter, who was in the store at the time, police said.

The responding officer got a description of the suspect and provided it to responding units. Minutes later, the suspect was spotted by another officer. The suspect was attempting to flee along railroad tracks that run adjacent to the parking lot, police said.

The suspect, identified as Taylor Matkivich, 26, of Lawrence, was taken into custody and the woman's purse was recovered with all if its contents still in it.

Michael Coughlin says he has seen Matkivich around the parking lot.

"Every time I come down here he's always talking. I know he's struggling," he said. "You can tell he is always asking for money and stuff like that."

The woman was examined on scene by EMT from Lawrence General Hospital but did not require medical attention.

Matkivich will be arraigned Thursday in Lawrence District Court. He is charged with unarmed robbery of a person over 65 and trespassing. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
