A Catholic Convent in Vermont's Largest City is Closing

The Sisters of Mercy say they will continue to maintain a presence in Vermont.

A Vermont convent for a Catholic religious order will be closing its doors.

The Sisters of Mercy, who have served in Vermont for 145 years, are planning to vacate the Mount Saint Mary's Motherhouse on Burlington's Mansfield Avenue this summer.

There is no immediate word on the plans for the five-story building.

The remaining sisters at the convent are planning to hold a series of events at the convent next month that will be open to the public. Visitors will be able to trace the history of the location from when it was a farm to the present day.

While the convent will be closing, the Sisters of Mercy say they will continue to maintain a presence in Vermont.
