A probable cause hearing for a 20-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a Massachusetts police sergeant and innocent bystander last month had to be rescheduled Wednesday due to technical issues.

Emanuel Lopes previously pleaded not guilty to multiple charges in connection with the July 15 slaying of Weymouth Sgt. Michael Chesna and 77-year-old Vera Adams, including two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm without a license.

He was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday via videoconference for a probable cause hearing, but the hearing had to be rescheduled until Sept. 19 after they were unable to get the video conference working.

Authorities said Chesna responded to a call of a crashed vehicle when he spotted Lopes allegedly vandalizing a nearby home near the intersection of Burton Terrace and Torrey Road.

The suspect allegedly threw a large rock at the sergeant’s head before shooting him with his own gun multiple times. Lopes then allegedly shot and killed Adams, who was standing near a window inside her home, as he was running from responding officers.

Lopes continues to be held without bail at the Norfolk County House of Correction in Dedham.
