Driver Allegedly Travels 10 Miles in Wrong Direction, Goes Through Toll Plaza

The 22-year-old suspect allegedly drove about 10 miles in the opposite direction before she was pulled over

A woman was arrested overnight after allegedly driving some 10 miles in the wrong direction while under the influence, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Troopers in Bedford received multiple calls of a wrong-way driver starting at about 3:45 a.m., state police said. The first caller reported the driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the F. E. Everett Turnpike.

Another caller reported the driver traveled through the Bedford Toll Plaza in the opposite direction. She eventually drove onto I-293 toward Manchester, where troopers were able to stop the vehicle near Exit 7.

Authorities identified the driver as 22-year-old Rachel Barris of Hollis, New Hampshire and said she was driving a 2016 red Subaru Forester.

Barris was arrested on charges that include driving while intoxicated and reckless conduct. The suspect was released on personal recognizance bail and is expected to appear for an arraignment on Sept. 9.
