A high-risk sex offender was released from a Vermont prison on Thursday. Two days later, he was arrested yet again.
State police responded to a report of a car driving erratically on Route 105 in Sheldon Saturday. When they determined 59-year-old Richard Laws was driving, they stopped him to see if he was driving in compliance with sex offender registry requirements.
After he was pulled over, Laws was arrested for driving with a "criminally suspended" license.
Laws was convicted of aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping and aggravated assault for a 1992 attack on a woman who rebuffed his advances in a bar. Other than passing through on two main roads, he is banned from being in three towns near the home of that victim.
When he was incarcerated, Laws did not comply with sex offender registry, according to officials. Because he served the maximum sentence, he will not be supervised by officials, but he must provide updates on his location.
Laws is due in court Monday at 1 p.m.
