After that final out in Los Angeles, after the spoils that came with winning it all, Red Sox manager Alex Cora faced a decision: visit the White House or don't. For many, it's an easy decision but for Cora, it's a bit more complicated.
Back in January, he said that he'd only go to the White House if he thought he'd have a platform to talk about Hurricane Maria recovery efforts. Today, he made it official that he won't be in attendance.
"Right now, I can say yes (that his decision on skipping is final), it might change tomorrow," he said back in January.
Cora is a native of Puerto Rico, and visited with several players shortly after the World Series win in 2018.
The visit is voluntary, and team officials have said that they respect his decision. Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers have all said that they will not attend either.
The trip is scheduled for Thursday, after the Red Sox finish a series in Baltimore.
"The government has done some things back home that are great, but we still have a long ways to go,'' he said on Sunday following a 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. "That's our reality. It's pretty tough to go celebrate when we're where we're at. I'd rather not go and be consistent with everything.''
