Allegedly Drunken Driver Hits Pole, Knocks Out Power in Hyannis

A driver is under arrest after striking a pole and knocking out power to some residents in Hyannis, Mass. Saturday night.

According to police, the driver fled the scene after crashing into a pole on Sea Street and Ocean Avenue shortly after 10p.m.

Witnesses say the pole began sparking and caught fire, knocking out power for an estimated 2,300 Eversource customers.

"Me and my wife were just hanging out in the house with our kids and we heard an explosion followed by the lights going out and then came back on for about two seconds, followed by another explosion, then the lights went out," said nearby resident Chris Richards. "So me and my wife went outside and there was already paramedics, fire trucks at the scene."

The driver, whom authorities have identified as 48-year-old Nicole Andrews, was found about an hour after the crash hiding behind some nearby homes.

Andrews is facing charges of drunken driving and leaving the scene of a crash.

Power was restored to all customers by 4a.m. on Sunday.
