Woman Accused of Driving Child to School While Under the Influence of Drugs

A Massachusetts woman is facing charges after allegedly driving her child to school while under the influence of drugs.

Andover police say officers responded to Bancroft Elementary School on Bancroft Road around 10:30 a.m. Monday for a report of an impaired woman.

When they got there, officers found out that a parent, later identified as Mary Ellen Shay, 41, of Andover, had pulled into a parking lot and walked her daughter into the school, where she had to sign her in as part of the school's drop-off requirement.

Staff members called police when Shay was allegedly having problems and mumbling incoherently while she was dropping her child off.

During their investigation, police say officers determined Shay was under the influence of drugs; however, police have not revealed what type of drug she was on at the time her arrest.

Shay, who was charged with charged with OUI drugs, wanton/reckless behavior to a child and unlicensed driving, has since been released on bail.

It's unclear if she has an attorney.

Andover police have also notified the state's Department of Children and Families about the incident.
