Appeal Filed for Man Convicted of Raping, Killing University of New Hampshire Student

Lawyers for a man sentenced to life without parole for raping and killing a University of New Hampshire student have appealed his convictions to the state Supreme Court, but the arguments aren't available for public view.

Seth Mazzaglia was sentenced for the Oct. 9, 2012, killing of 19-year-old Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott of Westborough, Massachusetts.

Mazzaglia denied raping and killing Marriott but said he helped cover up her murder. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2014.

Mazzaglia's lawyer filed a motion seeking to file his brief under seal last August, citing records still under seal at the trial court level. The state objected; the issue was sent back to the trial court. Last month, the Supreme Court allowed the brief to be filed under seal, but also ordered a redacted version.

The state must respond by March 11.
