Officials are investigating the cause of a 3-alarm house fire that prompted residents to rush out of their home overnight in Douglas, Massachusetts.

The multi-alarm blaze was reported just before 3 a.m. Wednesday at a multi-family home on Depot Street. One resident told NBC10 Boston the house has seven units.

Multiple firefighters could be seen responding to the inferno. Flames and thick smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the three-story building. The roof of a nearby garage was also set ablaze.

It is believed all the tenants escaped the blaze safely, although it's unclear how many are displaced. No injuries were reported.

Douglas Fire Chief Kent Vinson said a man woke up after hearing a popping sound, and then then fire alarms went off.

"Fire alarms are good. Smoke detectors are good. They save lives," Vinson said. "So it's very important we drive that message home. We have no injuries because of that."

The Red Cross will assist those displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Douglas Fire Department.
